The Answers

Q. Is the Garmin City Navigator compatible with the Garmin Edge 1030? I cannot see this model listed in the compatibility section.

A. The Garmin Edge series is designed to work with the Garmin Europe Cycle map. The Garmin Edge 1030 is not a satnav and therefore is not suitable to work with City Navigator mapping. You will need to use Cycle Europe Map instead.

Unfortunately, your Edge 1030 won’t work with any of the City Navigator mapping titles.

Q. I have Garmin nuvi 2445 with Western Europe map. Additionally would like to have Baltic states coverage for my nuvi 2445. Is it possible?

A. The Baltic states are included on the Garmin City Navigator NT Maps of Europe microSD/SD card.

The maps are out of date and I understand Kenwood/Garmin no longer support the GVN60. Do you offer up to date maps on a memory card that I can buy? Will I need to update the Garmin operating system?

A. Unfortunately, none of the Garmin maps we sell are compatible with the GVN60. Sorry we can't help you.

Q. I have a 2013 VW Golf. It is fitted with a M1B1 satnav update made by kenwood model GVN60. This uses Garmin maps. The maps are old (2015) and I want to update them to latest EU wide maps. Kenwood website leads me to 2017 citymapper, which is also very old. What Garmin maps will work and can you sell me them?

Q. I have a VW Golf fitted with the Kenwood DNX520VBT navigation system. It uses Garmin satnav. It has Garmin software version 2.53. Which UK map is compatible?

A. We no longer sell maps that are suitable and compatible for use with the Kenwood sat nav range. Can I suggest you contact and speak directly with Kenwood.

Back to questions

Q. Do you have maps for caravanning to suit my device Garmin nuvi 2519?

A. Unfortunately not, you would need to purchase a dedicated Garmin caravan sat nav for that purpose.

You can view the full range caravan and motorhome sat navs online here. You can also compare the range here.

Q. I have a Garmin 650T I have GB 1-25 map micro sd. I'm going on holiday to France. I like to do Geocaching and looking for map on micro sd to go into my device I will be staying near Caen in Normandy. Do you do this product?

A. I'm presuming you have either the Garmin Oregon 650t or Garmin Montana 650t? If that is the case, the Garmin TOPO map you require is the Garmin TOPO France North West v5 PRO microSD/SD card.

Back to questions

Q. I have a Garmin nuvi 3710. Will the North America sd card fit and work on this satnav?

A. Yes, the Garmin City Navigator NT 2019 Maps of North America microSD/SD card available to buy here will work within your Garmin nuvi 3710.

Due to the age of the nuvi 3710 it is strongly recommended that you download and install the latest Garmin firmware. You can find further map installation tips here.

Back to questions

Q. This is a strange question. My previous sat nav in my Mercedes used to say please turn left on its voice. I have updated the car and the newer version doesn't
say this anymore. Is there a setting that can make the new sat nav do this?

A. I'm afraid we do not know the answer to your question. You will need to speak to Mercedes and/or the seller who sold you the update to understand and learn more.

While we sell sat nav maps, we only sell them for portable/plug-and-play sat navs such as Garmin. We do not sell sat nav maps for built in systems.

Q. Your website is very useful, the FAQs very helpful and the note about checking the publication date of any SD card on internet very, very useful. I just have a few querstions...

I intend ordering from you a City Navigator NT North America SD card to use in my Garmin nuvi 2599 LMT-D with Europe 45 preloaded

Could you confirm the following (my understanding from your FAQs):

The SD card provides the data for the Garmin device to display. The device controls the display format.

If the Garmin device (Nuvi 2599 LMT-D) displays the premium lane assist and junction view then it will do so with the new SD card (which is what I want).

If the Garmin device (Nuvi 205W, which is my old one) does not display the premium view it will not do so with the new card.

However the card can be moved between the two Garmins if either device breaks.

This is an advantage to SD cards, rather than downloading maps onto the device from the Garmin site which ties the map to the device.

Also I should update the Europe map before inserting the new SD to avoid any risk of the SD card being affected in the update.

Fnally to confirm the new SD card is being read by the Garmin Nuvi 2599 I need to look in settings as the map will only be active when in the US.

A. You have interpreted our information correctly. The Garmin City Navigator map series delivers map data only. It will not add features that a Garmin sat nav did not already have.

You will be able to use the map in either your nuvi 2599 or nuvi 205W. Just not at the same time as the map SD card cannot be copied.

Your current European maps will be preloaded onto your sat navs hard drive, whereas the new North America map is on SD card. I would recommend updating the European maps first, but this shouldn't be an issue. Not unless an SD card is required, because you run out of hard drive space? For downloads and updates I would recommend you speak directly to Garmin UK. We are not Garmin and we do not provide map updates or Garmin maps via downloads.

You'll be able to check the North America map on SD card is loaded successfully in your Garmin nuvi 2599 or nuvi 205 sat nav here in the UK, before you travel. You'll be able to a) see the map listed in your nuvi's map menu and b) search an address in the US/Canada. You just won't be able to programme a route. Not until the sat nav recognises via GPS satalelite that you are in the USA/Canada.

The Garmin City Navigator maps of North America SD/microSD card can be purchased securely online here.

Q. I received delivery of the Yorkshire dales map. I ordered, or so I thought, a micro SD card to fit my Garmin Edge 1000 device. The card you have sent will not fit the device. Could you please advise how we can swap the SD card for the correct size?

A. The micro SD card is inside the larger SD card adapter. Garmin usually pack a small white booklet within the sealed black packet. Page 2 shows how to remove the micro SD card. At the Yorkshire Dales map page, in the section titled ‘How to install’, we include a link to our map installation page which will also answer your question: https://www.activegps.co.uk/garmin-maps-install.htm please see section titled ‘Locating the microSD card’.

Back to questions

Q. Do you sell compatible UK TOPO maps for hiking for use with my Garmin GPSMAP 60CS? No SD card slot on this device.

A. Unfortunately, the Garmin TOPO maps that are compatible with the Garmin GPSMAP 60CS were discontinued by Garmin a number of years ago. Alongside a range of SD cards, Garmin also released a DVD of all of Great Britain. The DVD could be transferred from a compatible PC directly via USB cable to the Garmin GPSMAP 60CS. The Garmin part number I believe was 010-10730-00. You could do an internet of eBay search of the old map?

The latest range of Garmin TOPO and Ordnance Survey (GB Discoverer) maps that we sell are not compatible with the Garmin GPSMAP 60CS.

To use the latest range of Garmin TOPO and GB Discoverer maps you would need to buy a Garmin handheld device from the latest range.

Q. We have a Garmin edge touring plus and have been emailed pre planned routes for a cycling holiday in Sri Lanka. Could you please provide us with information as to how we download these onto our Garmin device? Do we need to purchase a background map of Sri Lanka for the Garmin before we download the routes? We are getting a little confused. Hoping you can help!

A. We don't sell cycling maps for Sri Lanka, all downloadable maps can be purchased via Garmin's website.

I would suggest therefore that you visit/contact Garmin's website and see if a) they sell a downloadable map and b) can assist you further.

Back to questions

Q. I have a Garmin GPSMAP 4010 and want to know whether it is compatible with the EU723L Southern Europe BlueChart?

A. The three new g2 Vision HD Large cards (including EU723L) require what Garmin call N-map technology and this is only available in chartplotters released post 2013.

The following device models are not compatible with the new Garmin g2 Vision HD Large VEU721L, VEU722L and VEU723L

GPSMap 4x0
GPSmap 5x0/5x1/5x6
GPSMap 7x0
GPSMap 4xxx
GPSMap 5xxx
GPSMap 6xxx
GPSMap 70xx/72xx

So the answer is no, VEU723L is not compatible with your Garmin GPSMAP 4010.

Q. I wanted to know if the Garmin City Maps Sd cars would be compatible in a Mercedes A-Class 2017?

A. Unfortunately, the Garmin City Navigator maps that we sell are not compatible with built-in Mercedes A-Class 2017 sat nav. For map updates you will need to speak to your local Mercedes dealership.

Garmin City Navigator maps are only compatible with portable dash or windscreen mounted Garmin sat navs e.g. Garmin DriveSmart 61LMT-D.

Q. Is there any difference between this SD card and the ones sold in the States? If I buy from you and have a problem with the card while in the UK/Ireland, will I be able to get a replacement right away? I will not be able to tell if it works until I am actually in the UK.

A. We sell the very latest 2019 Garmin maps*.

I cannot say whether the map you could purchase in America would be the very same latest version? You could enquire with the retailer who is selling it?

We have never had a faulty Garmin map SD card, however before leaving the US for the UK you could check the SD card is working correcting. To do this you would simply need to install the SD card and then search out a UK address in your Garmin sat navs on-screen menu.

The UK and Ireland map SD/microSD card that we sell can be purchased online via the following webpage.

We offer installation help and tips for Garmin pre-programmed maps supplied on microSD/SD card here.

*2019 version of Garmin maps are currently being sold December 2018.

Back to questions

Q. Approach roads to new Mersey Gateway Bridge are nearing completion. Is it too soon to instal updated maps?

A. It can take several months for the cartographers to process raw survey data into actual digital mapping. I would suggest that if you need to see a specific new feature on a map that you contact the manufacturer and ask them.

You don't say which maps you are seeking but Garmin, for example, designate the latest City Navigator maps as 2019.10. Although they call them '2019' the data probably dates back several months (similar to a 2019 road atlas that you may buy for Christmas, but which was printed in the summer).

To avoid disappointment and ask about specific roads you could try calling Garmin Technical Support on 0808 238 0000.

Back to questions

Q. I have a Garmin 2408 nuvi with version 5.4 loaded. If I buy one of your maps for England/Ireland does the postcode etc still work? Also do I still get directions using roadside points?

A. The Garmin street-level road maps DO NOT delivery features to your Garmin sat nav e.g. post code search, they merely provide mapping.

It is your Garmin sat nav that delivers features. These will not alter when buying and installing Garmin City Navigator NT Maps of UK and Ireland microSD/SD card.

So yes the post code search facility will continue to function, as it does now.

Back to questions

Q. Honda Garmin SD navigation, will this update my 2013 maps in my Honda Jazz?

A. We regret none of the mapping SD cards we sell are compatible with Honda Garmin SD navigation. You will need to contact your local Honda dealership to purchase compatible maps.

Back to questions

Q. I am interested in buying a couple of City Navigator Garmin maps from you. Can I switch between maps while using the device. To do this will I need to put both maps on the same micro sd card or is it a case of swapping cards if I want to view/use the alternate map?

A.The City Navigator maps we supply are supplied on pre-programmed SD/microSD Card. These maps cannot be overwritten or added to.

Therefore, it would either be a case of changing SD cards over within your Garmin device. Or if the alternative map you'd like to use is installed on your Garmin devices hard drive, then you can simply switch between the map on the hard drive and SD card by selecting it within the Garmin's on-screen menu.

Back to questions

Q. I am looking to buy a Garmin GPS handheld device for hillwalking in ireland. What map software would be best? Does great britain 1:50k include ireland?

A. Garmin discontinued Discoverer maps for both:

Northern Ireland
Republic of Ireland

No currently available Garmin map include Ordnance Survey (OS) map detail for Ireland.

Back to questions

Q. Is it still possible to buy SD cards with maps suitable for the Garmin GVN 53?

A. I can confirm that the standard Garmin City Navigator NT maps have not been discontinued.

However, your Garmin GVN 53 is not compatible with the standard Garmin City Navigator NT maps. Garmin advise us that exclusive City Navigator mapping software is available from Kenwood, the manufacturer of your inbuilt unit, or perhaps from VW if the GVN 53 is built into a VW.

We can obtain some of the Kenwood maps but would need to check whether these are for your model. These are priced at £179.99.

Back to questions

Q. I have a Garmin nuvi 2525LM. I want to buy maps for Washington DC and North Carolina. Can you advise which maps I need to buy please?

A. The map that we sell that includes Washington DC and North Carolina is the Garmin City Navigator NT 2017 Maps of North America microSD/SD card.

Back to questions

Q. Have Garmin inbuilt satnav (Suzuki) unit Software 3.60. Unit asking for update, indicating CN Europe NTU 2014.20 Please advise which update to purchase?

A. You will need to contact Suzuki regarding this update.

The Garmin sat nav map updates we sell are for standalone Garmin sat navs only and are NOT compatible with build-in sat nav.

Q. I have free lifetime map updates on my Garmin nuvi 58 sat nav. I would like to know if I can download the updates to an empty SD card as I don't have the necessary 10GBs free on my computer. Can you please tell me if this is possible and how I can do it?

A.Sorry, we have no involvement with the download of maps from the Garmin website. We don't sell blank cards for Garmin devices - one reason being that some devices can only read up to a certain size of card e.g. no more than 2GB in some instances.

Downloaded maps are usually 'locked' by Garmin to your device only (to prevent their use in a different Garmin satnav). If you are simply updating the preloaded maps then this may overwrite the existing map file in your nuvi 58 - but we don't know for certain and, since we have no access to the Garmin lifetime free maps server we can offer no assistance. There is a Garmin technical support line: 0808 238 0000.

Despite having lifetime map updates some customers have subsequently purchased mapping on preloaded micro/SD card...

Q. I purchased a map for Australia and New Zealand from you which arrived yesterday. I put it into the Garmin. But something's wrong. No maps appear although I click on Enabled for this map. On the computer, when I click on the image file a notice says it is corrupted.

A. From your description it sounds as though you can see the map description on screen and that you have ticked to enable the maps, something like 'City Navigator NT Australia & New Zealand'.

If you have done this, then you have correctly loaded and installed the maps. We don't know every device inside out but I'm fairly certain that on the Edge you won't see the actual Australia & New Zealand mapping on screen until you are at the location. Nor will you be able to seek a route as there are oceans between you and the destination.

Interrogating the card on a computer can cause a corruption or overwriting of the files.

The SD card needs to remain inserted in your Edge at all times. A computer is not required. The map does not need to be activated. Preloaded mapping can occasionally override new mapping. It is sometimes necessary to open the map menu. Please refer to your Garmin user manual, but typically you would follow this procedure:

Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info

You may need to 'untick' any preloaded maps and 'tick' the newly loaded map. It may be that you only see the old maps (typically either NT v.9 or 2010.20 or similar). If so, please 'untick' whereupon the new maps should appear. These will include the identification 2015.10 or similar. What do you actually see?

You may find this page of our website to be useful.

Q. I have a new Garmin 2699LMT-D, I also have a Garmin City Navigator NT SD card for North America which I purchased in 2009. My question:Will the SD card be compatible with my new Garmin 2699 LMT-D?

A. Yes, Garmin maps are both forward and backward compatible.

You will though be using maps that are at least 7 years old, to view and buy the latest Garmin City Navigator NT 2017 North America maps click here.

Q. We have a Garmin Nüvi 2597 LMT here in Australia. Will the above card work for it ?

A.Yes, the Garmin City Navigator NT 2019 Maps of UK and Ireland microSD/SD card that we sell will be fully compatible with your Australian Garmin Nüvi 2597 LMT.

You can buy the map by clicking on the following link: https://www.activegps.co.uk/garmin-city-navigator-nt-uk-ireland-sd.htm

Back to questions

Q. I own a Garmin nuvi 2559LMT and wanting to use it in New Zealand and Hawaii, please advise which maps I need to buy?

A. You will need to buy two Garmin maps, these are:

1. Garmin City Navigator NT Maps of Australia and New Zealand microSD/SD card
2. Garmin City Navigator NT Maps of North America microSD/SD card

Back to questions

Q. Zumo 590lm for motorbike, wishing to purchase Morocco, require off road motorbike trails can you help me?

A. The two different Garmin Morocco maps that we sell are:

1. Garmin TOPO Morocco Maps DVD and microSD/SD card
2. Garmin City Navigator NT Maps of Morocco microSD/SD card

The full range of Garmin TOPO maps (which we are currently expanding) can be viewed here.

Garmin TOPO maps have been replaced in the UK by the Garmin GB Discoverer range, these maps use Ordnance Survey map data with a scale of either 1:50k or 1:25k.

I would recommend that you consider carefully the Garmin GPS device you want and that the maps you require will be compatible. I mentioned the Garmin zumo 590LM which is compatible with both Morocco maps (TOPO and City Navigator), however the zumo 590LM is NOT compatible with the Garmin GB Discoverer range.

A good device that will work with ALL maps mentioned (TOPO, City Navigator and GB Discoverer) is the Garmin Montana range e.g. Garmin Montana 680t and is preloaded with TOPO European maps (Great Britain and Europe).

Back to questions

Q. Would you happen to have a Dec 2014 chart SD card for my Garmin GPSMAP 2006c? Garmin have told me the plotter is obsolete! They cant provide any updated maps.

A. The Garmin GPSMAP 2006c uses Garmin Datacards. Unfortunately the Datacard format is no longer being supported by Garmin.

The latest Garmin marine chartplotters now use SD and microSD cards.

Back to questions

Q. Does the Garmin City Navigator Italy and Greece map cover the Island of Crete?

A. Yes, Crete is included in the detailed map coverage on the City Navigator NT Maps of Italy and Greece. If you view the map coverage image on the Italy/Greece webpage you'll see that the island of Crete is shaded in blue, denoting the coverage. A smaller version of the map coverage is pictured right.

Q. The 2 Din SatNav I have in my car is bought from Ebay and name is A-Sure china made. Can I install a genuine Garmin SD card in it for navigation. At present the navigation software is iGo8. I would like to use Garmin instead of iGO8. Please advice

A. Each manufacturer has their own operating system, software and maps. They are not interchangeable. We have no knowledge of the satnav that you describe. You will need to contact the seller for mapping advice. Garmin mapping (which is only compatible with specific models), like any software cannot be returned for refund after the seal has been broken on the manufacturers sealed packaging.

Q. I have recently returned to UK from New Zealand. I am very pleased with my Garmin Rhino 650 and would like to purchase Garmin GB Discoverer Maps for it. Can you please advise whether the map is compatible with my unit?

A. Yes, I can confirm that the Garmin GB Discoverer maps are compatible with your Garmin Rhino 650. You can view and buy the full range of GB Discoverer maps by clicking here.

Back to questions

Q. I have Garmin Edge 800 and would like to use it to follow routes - like the touring plus unit. If I buy the uk map chip, will this suffice? I would like to use to tour in different areas of the country.

A. It would very much depend where you intend to use your Garmin Edge 800.

If you were using it on roads only, then I would recommend the Garmin City Navigator (street-level) range of maps.

However, if you wanted to use off-road then I would recommend the Garmin GB Discover (Ordnance Survey) range of maps instead.

Q.I'm contemplating buying a new Mercedes Benz B class. The sales blurb says 'including pre installation for Garmin MAP PILOT navigation system'. The option costs £1550. Can I get a compatible, cheaper system elsewhere?

A. Built in Garmin models are usually exclusive to Mercedes and we are unable to supply accessories as these are also exclusive. A standalone Garmin nuvi satnav may prove to be a better long term option as we are often asked if map updates are available for built in models (could be any make, not necessarily Garmin). Unfortunately the answer is usually 'no'. However we are still able to supply map updates for Garmin (nuvi range) windscreen mounted models which were produced as long as 10 years ago. I realise that the whole point of the built in model is to give a sleek look and that you may not want suction mounts and cables…

Things may have changed and we not wish to deter you from buying the Mercedes built in Garmin. It may be worth asking Mercedes if the 'Garmin City Navigator NT maps on micro/SD card' are compatible with the Map Pilot range. If so, then you will be able to add maps for other parts of the world. It may be that the Map Pilot range comes with lifetime map updates - but these map updates will only be for whichever maps are preloaded - which may not necessarily be a country to where you may want to drive to in the future.

Q.If I buy a garmin SD card with uk maps do I just have to push it into the connection in the built-in sat nav in my Mercedes GLA car, or do I need anything else to operate it?

A. The Garmin map SD cards we sell are ONLY compatible with the Garmin portable
sat nav range e.g. Garmin nuvi.

For the latest maps for your cars built-in sat nav, you will need to contact Mercedes directly.

Q. I have Garmin nuvi 205W if I purchase City Navigator 2015 maps, will it show motorway lane guidance? I have updated the software, but need to know if latest map update will work showing/speaking road names does it show split screen on motorway lane guidance? Hope you can help! or do I need a new unit.

A. The Garmin City Navigator 2015 maps will NOT add features that didn't already exist on your Garmin nuvi 205W sat nav. The mapping software on SD/microSD Card merely updates your device with the latest maps. All of your sat nav features remain the same.

Q. I have a Garmin nuvi 465T that I would like to use specifically for truck delivery (FedEx) purposes in Italy. If I purchase the 2015 Italy and Greece maps, will my gps be able to properly route my truck based on height/weight/commercial route/etc, as it does in the US?

A. I can confirm that there is good truck data coverage available throughout Italy. So if you purchased the Italy/Greece card it would work fine for delivery purposes that you have in mind.

Something else to consider; you most likely have North America Traffic services (the T in 465T = Traffic Messaging Channel). A nuvi 465T purchased in the UK will only have European traffic services. The traffic receiver is the flat black block built into the power cable. Additional regions are available by subscribing to them - usually at around £30.00 - payable direct to Garmin.

Unless you know for certain that you have the Europe Traffic Messaging bundled with your GTM 25/26/35 power cable/receiver you may wish to add Europe by quoting the serial number on the cable direct to Garmin.

Alternatively we can provide you with a new GTM 36 (with lifetime traffic for Europe) for use with your nuvi 465T. This cable would give you European Traffic Messaging services – but not North America.

Q. I am seeking updated maps for my Garmin c510 streetpilot GPS. I know there are a lot of limitations for this device (sd card max size 2GB), can't accept maps later that early 2014. Ideally I need the most current maps of the UK, plus Europe that will work. Please advise.

A. Your StreetPilot cannot read SD cards which are larger than 2GB in file size. Therefore the Full Europe map and the North America map are no longer compatible simply because the file size now exceeds that which can be read by your c510.

Garmin are no longer selling ANY maps for the StreetPilot range at their own website. This is because they also sell downloadable versions of the same maps and their server cannot remotely assess whether a StreePilot device will be compatible with the download. They have however advised us that regional maps supplied to ActiveGPS of less than 2GB file size, such as UK and Ireland, Spain and Portugal, Italy and Greece etc should still be compatible with the StreetPilot 'c' and 'I' series (e.g. c510, c550, i3 etc).

We have successfully sold Garmin City Navigator Maps to StreetPilot owners during 2014 but we recommend that you read the Garmin map install page. You can also learn more here.

To buy mapping for the Garmin StreetPilot series, please choose your StreetPilot model starting here.

We work closely with the Garmin map department and will assist you should you require assistance with your StreetPilot.

Q. I'm thinking about extending my mapping area on my Garmin nuvi 2515LT. The map I'm thinking about is France. If I buy and install your micro sd card, will it remove the preloaded UK and Ireland thats on my sat nav, or is it just on the card?

A. By inserting the France/Benelux map card into the empty microSD card slot you will NOT overwrite the UK and Ireland maps already on your Garmin sat nav.

For more information, we have a page which explains more about installing the maps, which you can view by clicking here.

Q. I am interested in purchasing the Garmin EchoMap 50dv, ideally with the g2 vision maps. But if I understand your notes correctly, this plotter will not be able to use all the advantages of the vision maps? Is that really the case?

A. We have sought definitive advice from our Garmin UK Marine Distributor, who advise:

"There were some issues with the early Echomap and g2 Vision charts, however if the customer downloads the latest software they will be fine. If they buy a new unit now, it is fine out of the box."
