Garmin TOPO Maps Buying Guide

What are Garmin TOPO Maps?

Garmin TOPO maps provide detailed topographic mapping including contour lines, elevation data, trails, footpaths and points of interest across the UK and Europe. Designed specifically for outdoor navigation, they are ideal for hiking, trekking, mountain biking, geocaching and any activity where terrain detail matters. All maps are supplied on SD or microSD card and simply plug into your compatible Garmin device.

Great Britain 1:25K vs 1:50K

The Great Britain 1:25K map provides the most detailed topographic coverage available, showing field boundaries, footpaths and terrain features at large scale - ideal for walking and hiking in remote or complex terrain. The Great Britain 1:50K covers the same area at a smaller scale, better suited to route planning and general outdoor navigation. If you primarily walk on footpaths or in mountainous areas, 1:25K is recommended.

Regional France Maps vs All of France

The All of France title covers every region of France on a single card at a lower price than buying individual regional maps. If you only need one specific area of France, the regional maps (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast) are available separately at a lower price. For frequent travellers across France, the All of France title offers the best value.

Compatible Garmin Devices

Garmin TOPO maps are compatible with a wide range of Garmin handheld and outdoor GPS devices including the eTrex, Oregon, Montana, GPSMAP and Foretrex ranges. Some Garmin marine handheld devices and cycling computers are also compatible. The same microSD/SD card can be moved between compatible devices but cannot be used in more than one device simultaneously. If you are unsure whether your device is compatible, contact us with your Garmin model number and we will confirm.

Map Installation

Garmin TOPO maps are supplied on preprogrammed SD or microSD card. Simply insert the card into the SD card slot on your Garmin device - no PC, cable or software installation is required. We recommend updating your device software via Garmin Express before inserting a new map card.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Difference Between Garmin TOPO and City Navigator Maps?

Garmin TOPO maps provide topographic detail - contour lines, elevation, trails and terrain features - primarily for outdoor and off-road use. Garmin City Navigator NT maps provide street-level road navigation for use on roads and in towns. Many Garmin handheld devices can use both map types simultaneously.

Can I Use a Garmin TOPO Map Card in More Than One Device?

Yes, you can move the SD card between compatible devices, but due to copyright restrictions the map cannot be used in more than one device at the same time. The map is not locked to a specific device.

Do I Need to Update My Device Software Before Installing a TOPO Map?

Yes. Garmin recommend ensuring your device has the latest software before installing a new map card. Updates are available free of charge via Garmin Express.
