Transom Mounted Transducers
Transom mounted transducers are attached to the outside of the boat's transom (the flat surface at the stern) and sit just below the waterline. Thru-hull Mounted Transducers
Thru-hull transducers are installed by drilling a hole through the hull of the boat, allowing the transducer to sit flush with or protrude slightly below the hull surface. Choosing the Right Garmin Transducer
Mounting Type
Transom mount is the easiest to fit and suits most leisure and fishing boats. Thru-hull mount delivers the best sonar performance but requires a hole in the hull, making it the choice for serious anglers and larger vessels. In-hull mount is a good compromise for fibreglass hulls where a watertight installation with no hull penetration is preferred.
Sonar Technology - CHIRP, ClearVu and SideVu
CHIRP sonar produces sharper images and greater depth range than traditional single-frequency sonar by sweeping a range of frequencies rather than transmitting a fixed tone. ClearVu adds a near-photographic downward-looking beam for detailed images of structure and fish directly below the hull. SideVu extends coverage to port and starboard, giving a wide cross-section view of the surrounding underwater environment.
Hull Material and Deadrise Angle
The material and shape of your hull affect which transducer will mount correctly and perform well. In-hull transducers work best in fibreglass; bronze thru-hull models are suited to timber and fibreglass hulls. The deadrise angle - the angle of the hull bottom relative to horizontal - determines which tilt angle you need for thru-hull models such as the Airmar P19 and B60 range.
Connector Pins and Compatibility
Garmin transducers use 4-pin, 6-pin, 8-pin or 12-pin connectors, and the pin count must match the socket on your chartplotter or fishfinder. Adapter cables are available for some combinations, but matching the connector at the point of purchase avoids complications. Ultra High-Definition (UHD) Sonar
Ultra High-Definition sonar operates at frequencies up to 1.2 MHz, producing images of exceptional clarity at shallower depths. UHD transducers such as the GT24UHD, GT34UHD, GT54UHD and GT56UHD require a compatible Garmin chartplotter with UHD sonar support. If your unit supports UHD, upgrading the transducer is the fastest way to improve on-screen image quality.
