Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus Review - Questions and Answers

The Snooper MY-SPEED Plus is a 3rd generation GPS speed camera detector, replacing the Snooper MY-SPEED XL and Snooper MY-SPEED. The Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus alerts the driver to speed camera locations and advises the speed limit on roads in the UK and across Western Europe. Featuring a large 4.3-inch touchscreen, the MY-SPEED XL, Plus alerts via both on-screen and spoken or audible tones voice alerts. Scroll down to read questions and answers sent to us by customers. If you have your own question about the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus that has not already asked, please submit your question via our contact page.

Question: I wondered why my new My-Speed XL came with a TMC cable (cable with 2.5mm jack and two suckers) and a there is a socket in the side to take it, when it doesn't seem to use that accessory at all?  And also, there is a '2 Series' Snooper, Ventura Pro, Truckmate Pro and Bus and Coach User Guide disc included, in addition to the My-Speed XL User Guide disc. I also don't seem to need that either. Why would there be a TMC socket if it doesn't use the cable?

Answer: The Snooper MY-SPEED Plus is effectively the same unit as the Snooper S2700 sat nav range e.g. Snooper S2700 Truckmate. Apart from the fact it isn't loaded with street-level road maps, the MY-SPEED XL, Plus features speed camera and speed limit information. We are not the manufacturer, however I would expect that when the units are produced in the far east, CD discs and TMC antennas are included in the box. You can discard these parts as they are not required when using the model as a Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus.

Question: UK and EU speed camera units are said to be going through an upgrade process from the end of 2018 onwards. Will the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus be able to get updated to cover new upgrades systems. or would a new detector be required?

Answer: Yes, an update would be required and made available by the manufacturer - Snooper. In fact since the Snooper MY-SPEED was launched a new speed camera, HADECS was granted use in the UK. The MY-SPEED XL, Plus now includes this new camera type. A software/firmware and/or at very least speed camera database would be required to enable the alerts to a new type of speed camera in the Snooper AURA database, which the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus uses.

Question: I am hoping to purchase a Snooper My Speed without camera detection. To use only for speed of road travelled. I believe it is no longer sold. If I were to purchase your XL model can it be use as I require?

Answer: The Snooper MY-SPEED was discontinued by Snooper around 3-4 years ago. Unlike its predecessor the Snooper MY-SPEED Plus includes two FREE lifetime databases - speed camera updates and road speed limit updates. The Snooper MY-SPEED users were charged an annual fee for both of these databases.

When using the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus you can simply choose not download to the GPS speed camera database - you will not receive alerts to speed camera locations. Instead if you download the road speed camera limit database, you will receive road speed limits throughout the UK and Western Europe only.

The speed limit database uses here data and is updated once a year. Please note: some speed limits may be incorrect over the course of the year, before the next annual update is released. The speed camera database which is managed in house by Snooper is updated frequently throughout the year.

Question: Ref my speed xl. Please advise if this will work in my 2016 mondeo with heated windscreen? Thank you.

Answer: Unfortunately we do not have a list of vehicle windscreens that will and will not work with a GPS based device.

Can I suggest you contact Ford to ask them whether their windscreen will affect the performance of a GPS signal?

Question: How accurate is the speed limit database on the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus? I know of speed limit changes in the last two weeks, will these be reflected in the database?

Answer: The Snooper MY-SPEED Plus contains TWO databases:

1. Speed camera locations
2. Road speed limits

The Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus speed limit database is updated ONCE per year. The data is supplied by sat nav mapping provider here maps. Therefore, changes to speed limits since the last annual update will NOT be reflected within the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus speed limit database.

Speed limits at speed camera locations within the Snooper AURA speed camera database are updated on a daily basis by Snooper.

When first starting the MY-SPEED XL, Plus you are provided with the screen below, reminding you that it is the responsibility of the driver of the vehicle to ensure that they are driving within the posted speed limits at all times.

Question: My question is regarding the fitting. I have a 2014 Seat Leon, the cigarette lighter fitting is under the front centre armrest and this device attaches to windscreen. This would mean a lot of dangling cables, is there any way to avoid this? There is a usb port in the glove box which is on passengers side. Also the car has a built in sat nav, can this device be integrated into it or is it stand alone. I really think this is a good product but my main concern is the fitting of it? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer: There are two ways to power the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus.

1. Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus Vehicle Power Cable (included in the box)
sold separately)

Remember, the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus features a built-in rechargeable battery, so it is possible to use the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus without plugging any car charger in.

Question: Relacing Pantera snooper. Considering My Speed XL Plus. Can I wire direct rather than via cigar lighter? Is it safe?

Answer: Yes, you can hardwire the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus using the authentic Snooper hardwire power cable (pictured right).

If you require other accessories such as a carry case, you can view and buy them here.

Question: Does the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus detect the speed limit and give an audible warning that you are exceeding the limit at that time? In other words something that detects when you are in a 30mph, 50 mph or 70mph zone etc.

Also does it work in Northern Ireland and does it charge from the cigarette adapter.

Answer: The answer is yes to all of your questions. Although, rather than detecting the speed limit the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus features a database (updated annually) of road speed limits. The database includes all of the UK and Western Europe, so Northern Ireland is included.

When driving below the road speed limit the Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus screen is green, when exceeding the road speed limit changes to red and audible alert is emitted.

Question: If I mounted Snooper MY-SPEED XL, Plus in the centre console would it still pick up GPS?
